Basically there are two kinds of ephedrine in China: Ephedrine from natural source (ephedra) and ephedrine by chemical synthesis. The majority are former ones.

Products species include L-ephedrine, pseudo-ephedrine, L-ephedrine sulfate, methyl ephedrine, etc. In recent years, the production of ephedra extract powder (6%, 8%, 10%) has been increasing.

Inherently the Chinese production of ephedrine & pseudo-ephedrine has been subject greatly to the ephedra supply, as well as the production quota issued by central government. The potential capacity of ephedrine in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia is estimated to be xxxx MT/year and xxxx MT/year, respectively.

The production of L-ephedrine, pseudo-ephedrine in 2002 is xxxx MT and xxxx MT respectively. The export in 2002 is 7.4MT and 94.0MT, respectively.

The production of ephedra extract powder (6%, 8%, 10%) in 2002 is about xxxx MT, most of which are exported to USA.

In March 2003 the price of L-ephedrine, p-seudo-ephedrine and ephedra extract powder 6% is is USD40/kg FOB CMP, USD40 FOB CMP and USD6.8/kg FOB CMP, respectively.

Chinese government strictly controls the production, distribution and export of ephedrine.
